Recommend a breed for us
My husband to be and I would like to get a small dog that will get along well with the little kitten we have already, we want them to grow up together. I like both big and small dogs, but he prefers the tiny ones. Can anyone give any recommendations? I was thinking about a yorkie, what would you recommend. Anything beside a chiuaua Sp?, I really don't like them.

Your best bet is to contact the Human Society and ask them. I know you said smaller dogs but I know that Golden Retrievers are good with cats and they are so sweet.....if you could get your husband to consider a bigger dog.

I don't think my fiance wants a bigger dog, and we live in a condo in the heart of SF so it's kind of hard. Once we get married, we will get a house, but even then, the houses in SF here don't offer as much space as they do in the 'burbs or the country. Big dogs need yards to run and get excercise.

Re: Recommend a breed for us

You can try online tools like this one- http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

Figure out how much grooming you are willing to do, training, tempermant, etc.  Most terriers I know like to chase cats, so you may want to avoid those since they are natural vermin hunters and like to chase things.  Check out www.petfinder.com once you find breeds you like. It lists dogs for adoption all over.  A small mixed breed pup may be just what you are looking for, and it's so much better to adopt a homeless one in my opinion.

One of mine is a chihuahua mix, and he loves cats.  Yorkies are cute but can be a bit yippy.

Dachsunds are great and get along with almost anything. I have 2 of them. They love to be on your lap but you can train them to keep off if necessary.

But just be careful about breeding and bone structure, as you can run into problems with them down the line with their backs. You can't let them jump up and down on furniture. But overall they are GREAT dogs!

Re: Recommend a breed for us
French Bulldogs and Pugs both have playful friendly personalities, they both tend to have some breathing problems when it's hot out.  My friend has italian greyhounds and they are very sweet and snuggly.  Miniature pinchsers have a very good temperment and I know someone who has one with a cat as well and they are fine together.  I personally think that most breeds of dogs will be fine with cats if they are brought up with them as puppies.

^I agree with your last statement. If you bring up a dog w/a cat, they'll get along.

i used to have a fawn pug . . .he passed because of his breathing problems but he was incredibly sweet and got along with my menagerie .. .. i have read that the black pugs, i guess because of breeding, have less breathing problems . . . .

Pugs have such a great personality.  They are so fun!

I like Corgi's...they are cute.

so are Jack Russell's but they tend to be a bit aggressive sometimes.

Re: Recommend a breed for us

Check the humane society to see if they have any little puppies that need to be adopted! If they are a mix, steer clear though! Unless you know for a fact it's like a yorkie chihuahua mix! I adopted my dog and he was tiny when we got him... well now he is full grown and is 40 pounds!!!!

You might want to check out a basenji, a cavalier king charles or a shiba inu (like mini akitas... sooooo absolutely adorable!!!) Those are my favorites!

Re: Recommend a breed for us

if you just don't want a big dog, thats cool, but my sister has a golden in her apt - she has always been an apt dog and she is pushing 10. their first apt together was one in NYC - tiny tiny tiny, but the dog is so good that with regular training and walking, she has had - i think - only two accidents inside in the last 6 years, both which stemmed from relatively serious health problems from eating random crap at dog parks and table food.

anyway, my point is that while some big dogs (great danes, mastiffs) don't thrive in apt, some can with lots of love. and goldens are just SO good natured...

Re: Recommend a breed for us
jack russell terriers are great dogs and super smart too. i also like boston terriers.

i wouldn't scratch mutts off though. there are so many unwanted mixed breed dogs that need homes and sometimes it is a bit ridiculous to drop a couple of benjamins on a breed. unless you can afford to buy an expensive dog, keep in mind that a mutt could prove to be just as wonderful. in the end it is the dog's personality, not the breed, that determines how good of a pet it will be. my mom had a sheepdog/collie mix and she was the best (not to mention truly unique in appearance).

Re: Recommend a breed for us
Glam, did you get your Yorkie yet?  Yorkies are my favorite dogs in the whole world!  Let me know if you need any help.  There's a great Yorkie forum out there too that offers a lot of tips.  Make sure you get one that's been with its mother until 12 weeks or older.   They're so small that they need more time before they leave their mommy than big breeds do.

Also there's a national Yorkshire terrier rescue group, if you feel like being the Angelina Jolie of Yorkies and adopting an orphan.

And no, not all of them are yappy!  Smile [:)]

I actually got a yorkie, and we are thinking about getting another one, and now that we have a bigger house, we adopted a 2 year old chocolate lab, I had to convice him about this, because he's not really a big dog person, but not he really loves her. The labs name is Coco, the Yorkie is India. If we get another Yorkie, her name will India. Our kitten is a white persian, her name is Gucci, he thought of that name, not me, lol.

Re: Recommend a breed for us

do you have a little teacup yorkie?  i asked a breeder about that once and she yelled at me for asking.  supposedly there is no such thing as teacup - only standard.
