pitbulls

i've always wanted to adopt one.  but i know they have a rep. for being overly agressive etc.

my local humane society usually has older pitbulls that need adopting and i'd really like to... but is it risky adopting an older dog that hasn't been properly socialized?  my friend told me i'd be better off adopting a puppy so i could train it myself.

any advice would be appreciated!  thanks

Re: pitbulls

To be honest with you, I wouldn't consider adopting an older Pitbull, unless you have A LOT of experience with the breed, or one similar. They are hard dogs to handle and are very very powerful, not a good thing if you have no previous experience and don't know the dogs history.

I'm all for adopting older dogs, my other half and I have adopted two, but I would definitely be aware of your own limitations when choosing the breed...

Hope this helps!

Re: pitbulls

I do think that pitbulls have a majorly unfair reputation.  In many cases I strongly believe that there are no bad dogs out there, just bad owners.  There are many breeds today that I would consider to be much more aggresive than a pitbull, but pitbulls have have been used for so many awful things, they tend to have a worse reputation.  When Pitbulls are bred properly, they are extremely loyal to their master and instinctively protect them.  They are also very loyal to their family including very accepting and good natured with children.  They are also easily trainable, (easily trained to be good, or bad, which is the sad part).  The only thing that I would worry about with this breed is that there are so many inexperienced breeders out there (aka. dog fighters that breed their dogs without a lot of knowledge)  that breed the dogs to have undesireable traits for family dogs, (aggression, etc.)

All that being said,  I would not rule out adopting a Pit based on this.  Obviously a puppy would be the most ideal situation in ensuring that he is brought up in a good environment so you know for a fact that they don't have any weird quirks or that they've been mistreated, etc. but I think it's wonderful to adopt an older dog and give them a good life.  What I would do is go to a local shelter or contact local breed rescue organizations, (just google pitbull rescue organizations in your area)  and speak with them abou it and talk about whether it will be a good option for you.  I personally would not adopt an older pitbull from a shelter unless the employees were able to tell me the dog's history.  Adopting an older pit might not be as risky as you think.  It's sad to say this, but I know that most pitbulls that are taken from dog fighting environments are euthanized because there is just too much risk and liabilities assaciated with trying to retrain them, so chances are that the shelter pitbulls are not from fighting environments.

Goodluck!

Re: pitbulls
I own a pitbull and it's hard to say whether or not the dog will be aggresive.... It really depends on the home that they were living in before... If they came from an abusive owner than chances are that the dog might be a little aggressive however if you give this dog the love that it never had you can change it's aggressive ways.  Pitbulls are like babies they need TLC and if they see that they are getting it from their owner than they will stick by your side forever.  My dog is very protective of me b/c i love her dearly and i'm constantly spoiling her.  Whenever people meet my dog they can't believe that she is a Pit... so in regards to your question i feel that it really depends on the type of person you are... if you lov e dog's and are willing to take the time to train your dog than i would say GO FOR IT!!!!! I  LOVE MY PITBULL

Re: pitbulls

my advice would be to get it as a puppy.  that way you know exactly the type of upbringing the dog will have.

Personally, not just pits, but any dog that is older and up for adoption is a bargain.  you never know what trauma the previous owners put that dog through, nor do you know any of the dogs quirks.   unless you can get a dog who's entire history you know (friend of the family, old neighbor who can't care for dog...etc. etc) then I say adopt a puppy.

I agree with what Pinky wrote as well.  Some of the most loving, kindest dogs I have met are pitbulls.  Meanwhile, some of the littler "known not to be aggressive" dogs are the worst, spoiled brat dogs I have come across.  Jack Russells, and Chiuahuahas (sp) being in the top of that category.

Re: pitbulls

If you are going to adopt an older dog I would suggest trying to find a pit bull mix. I have a pit bull jack russel mix and he is the best dog in the entire world. A pit bull puppy would be fine, but I agree that you need to have a lot of experience with pit bulls before you try to adopt an older one that could have a lot of problems!

Way to go on deciding to adopt though! What state are you in maybe I can help find you one! I've helped lots of my friends find puppies and dogs to adopt and I have a lot of the sites bookmarked!

Re: pitbulls

The only puppies we've ever had have all been shih-tzu, pit bulls and recently a shar-pei.

i think that pitbulls have a bad name b/c when people hear "pit" they think of this rabies infested dog that likes to attack people but our pits have been nothing but sweet and nice and they never fight. (only with each other but i think they're playing :)

the only thing is that they grow sooo fast and they eat alot! but they're sweet and playful. i think it depends on the environment that they're in

^LOL. No I think pitbulls have the bad rep b/c people associate them w/the dog fights they see in inner cities. Its really sad how they raise pitbulls to kill like that. They are normally docile dogs.

Re: pitbulls
My boyfriend just bought me a pitbull puppy a couple of weeks ago. I was against getting one b/c of their reps but I've since done research and changed my opinion on them. They are less likely to bite people than many breeds and also have better temperaments. They are good around kids because they have a high tolerance for pain. BUT, every thing I read stressed the importance of socializing them early. If you are just going to keep him at home, it would probably be ok. They have a lot of energy so they make good exercise partners.
