studio apartment decorating (how to divide it up)

Hey guys!

So I recently just moved into a studio alcove with my boyfriend in nyc...its a really great apt. except im just use to having a bedroom...which now I dont have anymore because its all one room...anyway...with the way the aparment is set up...Im looking for a way to divide the "bedroom" from the rest of the room...like with a curtin on a track or somthing like that...think SJP bedroom in sex and the city...she had those curtins to divide up her bedroom...I want something like that...anyway I dont know how to go about looking for that in nyc...and i dont want to pay lots of $$$...any suggestion or ideas that you may have would be wonderful...i just dont know how to go about looking for the right thing i need to separate the room.

thanks guys!

Your could get one of those wrought iron curtain rods with a funky ball or something on the ends and hang the curtain rod from the ceiling instead of the wall then get some extra long drapes.

Here are some ideas that I like:

I have these in 2 of my rooms and really like them: http://ww2.potterybarn.com/cat/pip.cfm?src=shpcprwwhwall%7Crshop%2Fshpcprwwhwall%7Crshop%2Fshpcprw%7Crshop&pkey=cprwwhwall&gids=p4647

Yes, and if you are on more of a budget and need cheaper alternatives to what sweet_lil just suggested you can get rods like that at Target, Pier 1 and Ikea. Same with the curtains.

Good idea, and I know the pottery barn and restoration hardware drapes are pretty expensive, but if you know how to sew, go to a fabric store that has deorator fabrics.  Decorator fabrics tend to come on thos longer wide rols and the fabric is usually more heavy duty, etc and you could make some yourself!  And if your not a big sewer but on a tight budget, go to stores like Home goods or TJ Maxx or Bed Batha nd Beyond and find some pretty Kings sized flat sheets in the clearance section, (the quality will probably be nicer material than just buying cheep curtains at walmart, etc. and you can use the seam thing at the top of the sheet to slide the curtain rod through.

screens rock because if it is a mess and people knock or drop by you can shove everything behind there or block the view from the open door fast. use wall hangings and mirrors to expand wall interest and get diffused light to avoid the glare of a big light shining right in your face, a studio can be cheap and fun but if not done right a big drag.

I think pottery barn teens had an item just for the purpose of dividing a room from the ceiling or in half, it will work better than curtain rods, Ikea might have a hanging system as well, I have also seen the Expedite (sp) bookcase from Ikea used as a room divider if you have the space.

Re: studio apartment decorating (how to divide it up)
place a divider screen right in the middle of the room, long enough to back up a couch and a side table/tables against. you may need two. Back the couch up to it, place the side tables, ad a lamp, and put the coffee table in front of the couch (rug, etc.) on the OPPOSITE side of the screen, back your bed up to it like it's a head board, side table, lamp, etc. make sure there is room to walk around at least one side of the screen, and the screen doesn't need to go all the way to the ceiling, just be big enough to obscure the opposite room on the other side.

Here's an idea, I don't know how handy you and your boyfriend are but...if I had a studio I think I'd do something like this. Sorry, I just re-read your post and you said it's an alcove studio, so I assume the ceilings are too low. It doesn't handle the privacy issue either.
