Urban Outiftter & Anthroplogie. I am Stunned.

I just read this article about Urban Outfitters & Anthropologie.
Richard Hayne, founder and president, is an ultra right-wing
conservative. He has supports anti-gay agendas and has donated a lot of money to the Republican party.
I LOVE Anthro, but now I don't want to give them my
money anymore. ![Sad [:(]](/emoticons/emotion-6.gif)

wow, really? just because the guy is a conservative? thats really a
stupid reason to stop buying things from those stores... its not like
they are selling 'abortion is murder' t shirts or handing out
propaganda.. they are businesses, people go there to shop, no one
should care what the hell the president or CEO's personal life is
like...seriously at least be mature about things.

Are you seriously that naive? Have you ever been to Urban
Outfitters? The last time I was there, there were a whole bunch
of items poking fun at Jesus, anti-Bush books, T-shirts saying "Global
Warming, It's not Cool," propoganda in support of legalizing marijuana
-- all of this stuff catering to liberal-minded college students.
You don't find it bizarre for an anti-gay right-wing Christian to be
making his millions by selling these items? The bad part is he
then donates that same money to conservative agendas, most of which his
customers would probably object to. I find that very corrupt and
evil, and if you want to support that behavior, be my guest.
Have fun shopping at Walmart, GOP! Maybe you can fill up your
10-miles per gallon SUV with the money you saved shopping there.

I know I know I know. I totally love Anthro.
I have my share of gay friends, and I just can't give my money to
someone who thinks gay sex is the same thing as incest or
beastiality.

what's wrong with holding stores (in this case a CEO) accountable for their actions, whether it's socially, morally, politically etc etc?
so in your eyes, a truely mature person shouldn't give a crap about what goes on in the background, just as long as they like it?
also the article wasn't discussing his personal life in terms of who he is screwing or what kind of cake he likes. we're talking about a CEO with a formidable amount of money to give, possibly to political parties some of his consumers might not agree with. can't people care about who or what their money could be going towards?
and a store doesn't necessarily have to be selling tangible items such as 'abortion is murder' t shirts or propaganda to make it wrong. most of the time it's not going to be that blatant.

Ugh, what dumb a** comments. Exactly why the teeny boppers need to stick to their Abercrombie fashions and stop prattling on about issues that they can't yet wrap their heads around.
Anyway, PL - I totally agree. I cannot continue to support a company who's CEO has an anti-gay agenda. I have no tolerance for that.
Like Scout said, I DO get to decide where my money goes and it isn't to Anthro anymore.
If only I had found all this out after I bought my cute new suspender shorts though...*sigh*....Oh well. Thanks for posting the article PL!

I think that what a CEO does with his money is his business and what
consumers do with theirs is their business too. Are you that idealistic
that you think a CEO should actually give a CRAP about donating to
organizations that his company's customers would agree with? Hell no...
Not all of his customers believe in the same cause and its stupid to
donate money for causes that the majority of them WOULD believe in
because how the hell would the customers even find out??
Im a moderate Republican and I shop at Urban Outfitters... I dont care
how ultra right wing OR ultra left wing a CEO is, as long as Im able to
buy what I want.
Im from the school that thinks the ONLY responsibilty of a corporation
is to provide a profit to shareholders and protect their own interests
so they can keep doing business, case closed. We shouldnt make
corporations or CEOs America's babysitters because we have 'moral
objections' to their practices... THATS what is really naive.

You've obviously never taken a marketing class. LOL Its called "corporate social responsibility", and whole heck of alot of people give a "crap" about it. You have a right to your opinion, but its soley yours. If you dont give a crap where your money goes, thats YOU. You probably werent around when people boycotted soda companies for doing business in South Africa....or more recently, BenNJerry told congress not to drill for oil in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge.
Now obviously we cant keep tabs on wher everyone's money is going ALL of the time, but the info is readily available on corporate websites (that is, if you give a crap). Most websites publish reports on this, its a BIG DEAL.
Its so much better to never lose it, than to lose it and get it back--you can always tell the difference. With that said, most people never get it back, so if you get it back after you lost it, thats better than losing it forever.

I bought some suspender shorts there too! I bought them before
Christmas...before I knew about this. They're blue & peach
tweed. I wear them with knee-high socks, the ones everyone hates.
Love them.

GOP, I agree with you in that a CEOs repsonsibility is to provide maxiumum profit to his/her shareholders, but it's writing them too large of a carte blanche to allow them to abignate from any more repsonsibility.
Would you say that PetroChina should or should not purchase oil from Sudan? Sudanese oil is the cheapest and it maximizes shareholder's profits. PetroChina's oil money coming into Khartoum is also the sole thing that allows the genoicide in the Darfur region to continue.
A CEO has resources that impact the world, and to ignore what the use of those resources does is to ignore a moral responsibility.
the sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you-- dear prudence-- won't you open up your eyes?

You're right. That's the same with many huge conglomerates like Starbucks coffee & even Dunkin Donuts.
