I'm short...my jeans are too long :(
So I always have the same dilemma when buying jeans. I like designer jeans (sevens, chip & pepper, joe's etc.) but as I'm only 5'3' they're always too long on me. I have tons of old jeans that I didn't bother to get altered, and that quickly became chewed up and frayed in the back, near my heel, from me walking all over them. Last year, after buying a really nice pair of Sevens, I decided to have them altered to avoid repeating this problem, and asked my great alterations lady, to make them an appropriate length for wearing with flat shoes. They looked great, with the original hem attached for only $15, but I feel like they're too short. I just bought two new pairs of nice jeans (though I got them on discount since I'm worried I'm never going to find a solution to this problem) and once again, they're too long. However, they fit perfect with a two inch heel, and I don't really want to get them altered again if I'm going to end up feeling they're too short, or feeling that I'm not able to wear them with heels. So any advice? Should I get them altered? If so, how can I make sure that they don't feel too short, but still don't get frayed? If not, how can I prevent them from getting all icky at the bottom? Any help would be very greatly appreciated!!

Nordstroms tailors their jeans free of charge, and $10 if you didnt buy from them. The general rule is fit them to 3 or 4" heels. If you didnt bring your heels, they'll even provide some. This is the perfect length, because when you wear flats, the hem hits the ground slightly. Tailoring to flats would be a huge nono, you basically ruin the jeans. Unless you never ever wear heels.

I bought some Mia's last week, I need them tailored. And I have some vb rr's that Ive had forever, they REALLY need to be tailored, they are super long. Im glad you made this thread. lol
Its so much better to never lose it, than to lose it and get it back--you can always tell the difference. With that said, most people never get it back, so if you get it back after you lost it, thats better than losing it forever.

Nordys has changed the rules (and NM too), they no longer alter items that havent been purchased at the store. Sucks. Guess I have to find a new place.

thanks for the advice :) So having them tailored for 3-4 inch heels won't make them so long that I'll be walking all over them? I'm going to be walking all over on a snowy wet campus and know it'll be hard on them.

Well, you have to exercise common sense.  If its snowy and wet outside, I'd be wearing boots regardless of the length of my jeans.  But thats just me.

Right.  And then, if they're too long you can always shorten.  But if you make them too short...you cant go back.  So tailor them to your own taste (that's kinda the whole point of alterations).

One little peice of advice for hemming brand new jeans:  Wash and Dry them the way that you plan on laudering them at least 2-3 times before you have them hemmed.  I have had 2 pairs of jeans that I brought home and washed and dried once and took to my tailor to hem and a few months later I can no longer wear them with high heels (and unfortunately it's not becaue I have grown since I'm 27).  Some designer denim seems to take a few wahses to shrink in my opinion.

^^It's not just designer denim - my Wranglers shrink a tiny bit every time I wash them.  By the time they're falling apart they're easily an inch or two shorter than when I got them!

Re: I'm short...my jeans are too long :(
Thanks for the advice everyone! I got my jeans hemmed for 2ish inch heels and they're just perfect, I'm not walking all over them when I have flats on but they look great with heel too. Another question regarding jeans shrinking in the wash... do any of you let your jeans air dry, or at least partially air dry? If so, at what point do you take them out of the dryer? I'm thinking that to keep my new jeans from shirnking I'll take them out when they're about 60% dry and hang them out to dry the rest of the way. Any input on whether this would be sufficent to keep them from shrinking?
