edit #1 suvi, lara stone & sasha by mert/marcus. strong stuff here to lead off sept W, M&M have a pretty great track record in W in recent years. love the lighting & mood here, somewhat expressionist, almost kirchner/kokochka, with cool still lifes like a burning rose & a game bird. alex white's styling is pretty brill here, standouts incl suvi lanvin, sasha branquino [maybe best pic], balenciaga, V&R, CDG. its all great its an arty poetic & fashiony edit & these girls are rocking, with sasha in the lead. hot 8.2 of 10 nice long expository edit.
edit #2/cover gwynyth by klein. true story. i was at Vered gallery in east hampton in august. Vered is showing lots of klein's incl horses. I asked her, 'have you seen august W? steven shoots gwynyth feeding a big rat with a sippy cup!!'
Vered's reply? "He's genius!!"
OK. klein can be great like D&G shannan edit this year & the posh/becks cluster edit was better than some will admit. but this gwyn is pretty middling. dumb stuff like a fat rat, or gwyn upskirt underneath a jesus painting. wanna be stuff like gwyn with outie-belly button, try to be sexy, but not. i suppose the italianate dolce vita ironed hair on cover is glam-ish. but the level that klein tried to reach with mommy gwyn here fails. its an attempt at a racy/creative hollywood/actress edit that is more stupid than clever. I dont like rats w/sippy cups & you shouldnt either. no genius. 5.5 of 10. I realize gwyn really had a hurt leg but despite trying for "Crash" chic this bridgehampton edit is a no go
edit #3 laura dern by teller. huge fan of juergen's work. his harsh flash can be cruel on mature subjects. his super model edit 1-2 years back with 70s/80s models was good, but some saw as unflattering. his flash is harder on dern. these pics are hard harsh & unrelenting. yet the backgrounds & settings are fabulous. I am a huge fan of telr but a subject like dern is not well served by his unforgiving lens. still these are arresting images & I am blown away by teller's framing & setting. 7 of 10
edit #4 snejana & anabela by mcdean. most traditional W style edit & also best in ish. always loved snejana & anabela is brill counterpoint for her. love the darkness mystery chiaroscuro of mcdeans pics, US vogue doesnt let him do this. top shelf evening looks by alex white flawless fall & night time. just a great edit all around cant say enough about snejana, anabela & mcdean. 9 of 10 best in book
edit #5 ali michael by sorrenti. dont love ali per se but her schoolgirl innocense is perfect here. sorrenti shoots haunting empty NJ house set, very atmospheric & dreamy. camilla nickersons styling of schoolgirl type cardigans, skirts just so so great, inspiring. sorrenti & camilla took this shoot to several levels above what ali and/or another mag would have delivered. subtle & impressive & got to hand it to camilla & sorrenti. 7.9 of 10.
VERDICT: just a superb sept w. model casting is best in usa. lara, snejana, sasha, suvi, anabela. the photos are Art by M&M, mcdean, teller, sorrenti. the styling is the best ive seen outside euro vogues like paris & italy. bonuses to alex white & camilla. ok gwyn & klein were goofy but hey its comic relief, klein is a real comedien half of the time. just a superb & inspiring sept fash book. THREE THUMBS UP. !!! luv ya
