edit #1 fashion through the ages with gemma, lily, sasha, tanya & freja by sorrenti. I think the pics here are a bit inconsistent. sasha in miu miu is great but gemm in chanel is weak. gemm in dior is gorgeous but tanya in pugh is awkward. still you cannot fault these girls they are 5 of the best models alive now. i think mel ward's styling is forced - they tried to give a retro slant to lots of 2007 looks that arent necessarily 'of' 25 or 50 or 75 or 125 years ago... but still with these great girls & more good pics than weak, its an effective lead edit, it tried to be huge but its just very good mainly cos of the girls & some of sorrenti's lighting. 7.3 of 10 for the girls.
edit #2 amber valetta american idol edit by lindbergh. this concept comes off much better. reminds me of so many genius amber/lindbergh shoots in HB in 90s. jenny capitain styled - the clothes def take a back seat to the AI theme, and i dont think theres that much great clothes wise anyway: ricci, maxmara, D&B & missoni look best. but lindbergh totally came through with the AI theme. and amber is also better here than shes been in a year or 2, shes been coming up short in us vogue & even a few lindbergh HB edits in 06-07. cool production number here. 7.6 of 10.

KLs pics are decent but not top shelf. but i am so in love with stammy & snejy here that it still rocks. plus brana wolf's couture styling is really good. many killer looks like dior givenchy chanel val, more chanel, valli armani wow i am loving these clothes. the girls & the clothes bring this one home. KLs pics arent technically 'wow' but the paris atmosphere is. 7.7 of 10 and the girls really make it go.
edit #4 kid versions of designers with chanel iman by lindbergh. i think this kid concept is dumb. the galliano is closest. dont like chanel iman, very over-rated girl. lindbergh pulls it off but between the dumb kid idea & chanel its more weak than hot. jenny capitain tried but the concept is dumb. 4 of 10
edit #5/cover jen aniston by lubimirski. he did a real lindbergh idea in the desert. also copying his old boss sorrenti when MS shot aniston. the pics are adequate. capitains white dresses are good clothes but i have zero interest in aniston. and the cover is such a piss poor version of 1970s HB clean cover look that it sucks on 1 of their most important issues this century. cannot stand aniston even if the pics & clothes are at least decent. 5 of 10 disappointing choice for anniversary issue cover & star. do not need to see aniston in any more fash mags but you know we will. i have neer seen 'friends' even once nor any of her movies & I do not think Im missing anything. actresses on covers shows that 21st century us fash mags are inferior conceptually to the glory days on 20th century fash mags :((((
edit #6 trentini by sundsbo. he tried for a real glam disco shiny look here. I think it detracts from the pics' mpact, but it does suit the shiny clothes. doesnt matter trentini is so great that she shines even through all the tinfoil. shes a very under-rated model. I LOVE trentini but shes does not get the props she deserves, even as a superstar earning million$. geo cortina's styling is good here he chose a lot of high impact colour evening pieces. between trentini & the clothes its a winnr even if the pics are a bit distractiong & techy. 7.6 of 10 mostly for trentni. want to see her in bikinis in HB soon
edit #7 ralph in russia with inguna, valentina, anastasia & more by lubomrski + ralph retro feature. Im a huge ralph fan i wear his purple label as much or more than any other label. once again alexi's pics are pretty average. too bad cos there are some good girls & clothes here. still its decent. retro feature from ralph book is great. Im going to buy his book, $80 om amazon not $125 at his store. Im a huge fan of his campaigns & image/worldview. great stuff here: clothilde, winberg, tux on beach... he really defines an aesthetic look & lifestyle branding, its complete. 7.4 of 10 for RL
edit #8 naomi by lindbergh. white resort looks by brana wolf. best Omi edit in 5 or more years. i thought her concept stuff with klein in W was dumb & degrading. lindbergh brings it back to the way he'd shoot omi in 90s. like amber edit it makes you remember all the good stuff lindbergh did in 90s HB. best Omi in years. 7.5 of 10

BEST STORY : from pg 107 -149 is a long retro feature on HBs 140 year history. incl Erte in 1930s, cocteau 40s, manray 30s, dali 30s, carmel snow, vreeland, bacall 40s-50s, avedon & audrey 50s, hiro, ali macgraw, lindbergh etc etc. anyway from 1930s-1960s-70s HB looks like the best art directed magazine Ive ever seen. the covers, the art, the photos, the layout, the models, its all just the best of the best. the covers & layouts blow me away. some euro mags like paris vogue sort of do this stuff in a 21st century version, W actually is very arty at its best, but in general us mags like vogue & HB are so watered down & mass market now that theres nothing like this type of aesthetic ambition that i can see. anyway this retro HB feature really gives you a lot of respect for HB through the 1970s at least, but also makes you cringe looking at jen aniston on the cover of this anniversary issue.
VERDICT: This is 1 of HB's most important ssues of this century so far. Glenda loaded it with some high powered stuff that works: lindbergh with omi & amber that recalls their 90s glory. snejana & stam in paris. trentini w/sundsbo. sorrenti w/5 great girls. ralph russia & retro. the HB 140 yar retro feature is best of all looking at their genius art & photo approach from 1930s-70s especially. but that also makes the flaws in this issue stand out more. a weak aniston cover & alexi's edit that was piss poor lindbergh/testino lite. the kids edit w/chanel iman is dumb. donna, dvf etc is dull. there are some solid photo edits in this ish but nothing art wise can compare to what HB had from 1930s-70s. make no mistake their history is breathtaking. and this is a good 2007 issue but also makes one long for the days of erte avedon hiro macgraw etc. still theres lots to look at this month & the 2007 edit group was a better than one usually sees in HB. ONE STRONG THUMBS UP for an important HB anniversary issue.
